This Earth Day, why not give the environment a break by parking your car, dropping into a comfy chair and losing yourself in a good book? My book recommendation for Earth Day 2012 is Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.
I just recently finished reading this book, and I have to
say that it is one of the best works of young adult fiction that I have had the
pleasure of reading in quite some time.
To give you an idea of what the book is about, here's a
brief synopsis from the publisher:
Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian
throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is
worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.
Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British
Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of
being discovered.
With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in
the most unexpected ways, taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world
adventure that will change both their lives forever.
This book would be a wonderful tool for a cross-curricular
unit as it touches on so many areas - science, history and of course, language
arts.
For more information about this book, and the rest of the
books in the trilogy, you should visit the author, Scott
Westerfeld's website - it's an attractive site that is full of
interesting links, photos, and much more.
